Assessing Other Qualifications - Senior Secondary Qualifications

TASC can recognise senior secondary (Year 11 and 12) education results from other Australian States and Territories and from overseas countries (where sufficient comparability data exists) as contributing credit points towards achievement of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education, or as evidence an applicant meets the requirements for standards in:
  • everyday adult reading, writing and communication
  • everyday adult mathematics
  • everyday adult use of computers and the internet.

TASC can only recognise results when a student has successfully completed at least one full year of senior secondary study or more. We are unable to recognise partial completion of a full school year.

If you are a student transferring from another Australian state at the end of Year 11 and are intending to complete Year 12 in Tasmania, you can apply for this service. Note that if you have already achieved subjects that may count towards your ATAR you will need to contact UTAS for formal recognition of these subjects.

If you have a query about what subjects can be counted towards your ATAR please send your query to the following email address: ATAR.enquiries@utas.edu.au

Processing Time

Depending on the type of information provided requests for recognition may take up to 2 weeks to process.

If all the necessary information is not provided, the Office of TASC will need to contact the student/school to request this information. This will delay the process of considering the application and of advising the outcome.

Which overseas qualifications can be assessed?

TASC can only assess qualifications for comparability where there is sufficient information available about the education system in the country where you completed your studies in the relevant Australia Government Country Education Profile. In many cases Country Education Profiles do not include secondary or senior secondary school qualifications in the assessment guidelines. Therefore we will be unable to provide an assessment, as there insufficient information for TASC officers to determine how an overseas school qualification compares to Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) levels, particularly in cases where school qualifications were completed several years ago. Country Education Profiles generally only cover qualifications equivalent AQF Certificate IV and above, which is a higher AQF level than secondary or senior secondary school.

Overseas secondary or senior secondary assessment for the purposes of applying to the Australian Defence Force

If you are applying for employment with the Australian Defence Force and need to demonstrate you have achieved an Australian English or Mathematics result at year 10 or year 12 level, the Australian Defence Force may accept evidence you can meet the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) standards in everyday adult reading, writing and communication, and everyday adult mathematics as sufficient evidence to meet ADF entry requirements.  TASC have agreed that ADF candidates may sit TASC safety net tests if they are unable to meet ADF entry requirements in other ways.  Please visit www.tasc.tas.gov.au/1906. for information about TCE everyday adults standards and www.tasc.tas.gov.au/2215. for information about safety net testing.
