Focus on Children, Level 1, is a practical course that develops basic knowledge and skills required to interact appropriately with children and others in a range of child care environments, including the home.

Some issues and challenges encountered by parents, child care providers and others caring for children are explored and learners develop awareness of the theoretical underpinnings of child development.

Through observation and experiential learning, learners will develop understanding that every individual is unique, and appreciate that the care of children is valuable and rewarding.

Notes

In 2015, as part of the accreditation process, TASC sought advice from the Department of Justice regarding this course's access restriction. The advice given recommended that Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) should be required of learners prior to undertaking practical work with children: the safety of children being paramount.

This advice was partially based on the assumption that, as the course is designed to prepare learners for work in child care industries, it could create false expectations for a learner to later find that they could not work in the area because they failed the check that would be required at that stage of their career.

The Department of Justice also noted that students working with children would be unlikely to be under the direct supervision of a teacher at all times (e.g. out of a teacher's line-of-sight) and that there could be significant ramifications if abuse occurred. RWVP would offer children, the teacher and the course provider protection.

This information was considered and actioned in the course requirements of the accredited course.

The course was accredited by the TASC Executive Officer and contains the access requirement that:

- learners MUST NOT undertake any of the practical components of this course involving interactions with children until they have obtained a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP). A copy (scanned or photocopied) of each learner's Registration Card will be retained on file by the provider for a period corresponding to the provider's records and archive schedule / procedure.

Providers of this course are required to apply this access restriction. They will be audited on their compliance with this requirement.
